A new systematic review and meta-analysis by Shashank Ghai and team from Karlstad University suggests Yoga Nidra may significantly improve stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Discover the science behind this powerful guided relaxation practice and why researchers are paying attention.
Mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, and depression continue to rise worldwide, leading many people to search for natural, accessible approaches to emotional well-being. A newly published systematic review and meta-analysis on Yoga Nidra provides promising insights into how this ancient yogic relaxation practice may support mental health.
The review analyzed 73 studies involving more than 5,200 participants and found that Yoga Nidra showed moderate-to-large improvements in stress, anxiety, and depression outcomes. Researchers observed benefits both when Yoga Nidra was compared to no intervention and when compared with active interventions such as meditation, relaxation techniques, or yoga-based practices. Yoga Nidra, often described as “yogic sleep” or non-sleep deep rest (NSDR), guides practitioners into a deeply relaxed state between wakefulness and sleep. During practice, attention is systematically directed through body awareness, breathing, visualization, and emotional relaxation. Researchers suggest these practices may help regulate the nervous system, reduce cortisol and stress responses, improve emotional regulation, and support healthier brain function.
The paper also highlights growing scientific interest in Yoga Nidra’s effects on biomarkers linked to mental health, including heart rate variability, inflammation, respiratory rate, and autonomic nervous system balance. However, the authors caution that many existing studies still have methodological limitations, meaning more high-quality clinical trials are needed. Even so, the findings suggest Yoga Nidra could become an important low-cost complementary tool for supporting mental wellness in modern society. As interest in mindfulness, NSDR, and nervous system recovery continues to grow, Yoga Nidra may offer a powerful bridge between ancient yogic wisdom and modern neuroscience.
